My
father was an absentee father. He
held down two, sometimes three jobs at a time. So we could have what we wanted. Not what he wanted.
(I should mention he was on Iwo Jima. He would have wanted me to).

John
Kolaczkowski’s dad got out of Poland just before World War Two, made it to the
UK and flew back to Poland several times.
In a Spitfire.
They
used to be an expression. If a kid
did something your parents’ didn’t like - you were grounded.
“I
can’t go. I’m grounded”. “My Dad grounded me”. “My mom says I’m grounded”.
Three
jobs. Iwo Jima. Spitfires.
Boy, were we grounded.
